Part 3: Mama, LLC

In Part 2 of this Pelvic Health Physical Therapy, we were introduced to Dr. Laura Keyser, a physical therapist who specializes in maternal and child health. She also is the co-founder of Mama, LLC. Dr. Keyser was able to share some aspects of her work at Mama, LLC and to inform us of some projects the firm is working on.

Mama, LLC is a physical therapy and public health consulting firm that specializes in domestic and international women’s and girl’s health. Mama, LLC partners with humanitarian organizations, professional organizations, educational institutions, and for-profit groups to meet maternal and women’s health needs around the world. The firm’s work includes but is not limited to education efforts, promotion and advocacy, research, and rehabilitation capacity building.

When asked about her work at Mama, LLC, Dr. Keyser reports:

“We see the health concerns of women and girls around the world as experiences on the same continuum. While women in low income, low resource settings may suffer severely debilitating birth trauma, such as obstetric fistula, many women in the U.S. also suffer pelvic health problems, including incontinence, pelvic or sexual pain and the associated shame, depression and isolation. Our aim is to address these concerns at a population level by applying our expertise in women’s health care and our experience in public health research, policy and program development to positively impact the health and well-being of women and girls, their families and their communities throughout the world.”

Mama, LLC is currently working on two main projects. The first is a with a Boston-based biotechnology start-up that is developing a series of diagnostic and therapeutic tools to address female pelvic floor dysfunction. Keyser and her team are providing expertise with research design and implementation, development of telehealth and clinical support related to their products, and advocacy and health promotion. Their second project is with EngenderHealth where they will be publishing a comprehensive field guide for health workers in low-income, low-resource areas who want to gain knowledge and clinical skills in addressing women’s and pelvic health conditions, such as gynecologic fistula, pelvic organ prolapse, incontinence, etc.

It’s inspiring to see the work of physical therapists working towards in the world of international maternal and reproductive health. It just shows the importance of global reproductive health efforts and how everyone and anyone has something to offer towards these initiatives.

Thank you to Dr. Laura Keyser for the sharing her knowledge and expertise in the making of this blog post.
