What does your work position look like and what kind of things are you doing on a daily basis?
Currently in charge of Data management and overall coordination of data collection activities at an NIH-funded project, implemented through the Kenya Medical Research Institute, and a graduate student in Monitoring & Evaluation at Maseno University in Kisumu, Kenya. My overall professional goal is to help develop digital health applications that can help improve health seeking behavior and outcomes in poor rural settings. I have been working on programs that link vulnerable community members like women and children to community health workers and or health facilities for treatment and health information. As a data manager, my job responsibilities include developing and enacting data management plans, supervising a team of data clerks, training research assistants and community health volunteers, programming electronic data collection applications and deploying them on smartphones/Tablets. Prior to my current work, I was data manager at the Kenya Medical Research Institute and Centers for Disease Control (KEMRI/CDC) project, and the study coordinator for multiple projects through the Safe Water and AIDS Project (SWAP). During the SWAP project, I led a team of over 30 members of staff and coordinated a pool of Principal Investigators and technical staff drawn from various international organizations. I have been trained by different trainers and subject matter experts on data management methods (Data collection, Entry & Analysis), tools usage and error detection mechanisms and has been able to acquire skills and information on accurate data recording. I can formulate questionnaires (both electronic and hard copy), recruit research enumerators, train on questionnaire administration, supervise and oversee other logistics regarding research work.
Other Duties:
· Design electronic data entry/collection tools and storage systems for use by the data team
· Train/mentor staff on Community Health Campaigns (CHC), and data collection materials.
· Train and mentor health facility/site staff on data collection tools and storage protocols
· Routine and timely data entry of monthly reports from health facility/sites into various databases/report systems
· Download, clean and merge datasets for data analysis and feedback
· Carry out Routine Data Quality Assurance (RDQA) at select sites each month
· Train and mentor site/staff on Study and Ministry of Health registers
· Work with data staff and study facilities/community-based data collectors to improve on data accuracy
· Update data reports/summaries weekly to update study team and other stakeholders.
· Prepare notification of Lab results list and share with facilities and stakeholders.
· Keeping track of equipment/hardware, overseeing their maintenance/upkeep.
· Prepare, write and submit monthly reports to the Study PIs, Coordinators and Research coordinator.
· Work closely with Lab and Study coordinators to ensure high quality data is collected.
· Ensure electronic data collection equipment (tablets/phones) are loaded with airtime/mobile data on a monthly basis.
· Trouble shooting internet and general electronic/equipment, user support and software updates/installation (ICT).
· Periodically backing-up study data on external hard drives.
· Sending out lab results in bulk text messages to clients who turn HPV negative.
